STUART CHARLES TOWNER

individually crafted gardens

Practice Philosophy "In garden arrangement, as in all other decorative work, one has not only to acquire a knowledge of what to do, but also to gain some wisdom in perceiving what it is well to let alone" Gertrude Jekyll - British horticulturist, garden design, artist & writer The underlying drive behind Stuarts practice is individuality and the respect of what has gone before. Every garden is unique, just as every person is different from the next, with each garden that is created being tailored not only to the client, but to its context and surroundings. The old and the new should sit side by side, timelessly crafted, yet in a state of ever changing flux. Stuart has his own style, a love of traditional Arts & Crafts planting and clean modern lines, but the guidelines always remain the same; who are the clients, how do they use the space and how then does the design relate to that client, the house and its location as a whole. To define his style Stuart would say; "I'm a mixture of Gertrude Jekyll and Frank Lloyd Wright. A modern man seeking new materials and ways to express design, but always with a fundamental traditional undertone running throughout everything I do"
